5 Incredible Animals To See On a Jaguar Safari

For those heading off to the lush rainforests of South America on a Jaguar safari, there is often one animal at the top of the list - Panthera onca, the mysterious and majestic Jaguar. There is good reason for its appeal: its sleek and strong physique, striking beauty, and spiritual significance in many South American cultures are a compelling testament to nature's power and importance in our world. But this is a region of the planet blessed with incredible wildlife, and it is not the only star attraction here. Read on for five of the most interesting and impressive animals that can be seen on a wildlife watching holiday on this unforgettable continent.

5 Incredible Animals To See On a Jaguar Safari

Brazilian Tapir

One of South America's largest land mammals, the Brazilian Tapir is another highlight of the Jaguar safari. Despite its elusive nature, it can often be reliably sighted after nightfall, as they emerge to forage in relative peace and quiet. Brazilian Tapirs are fond of water and tend to stay close to river banks so they can swim away if faced with danger; they can also be found wallowing in pools.

Giant Anteater

Much of the appeal of the South American wilderness lies in the rich biodiversity produced by long millennia of evolution, which has resulted in some amazing species. The Giant Anteater is one of these. It is the largest anteater in the world, has successfully adapted to a number of habitats, and is an unmistakable sight with its distinctive elongated face and long feathery tail.

Giant River Otter

A favourite species among those who see it while on a Jaguar safari, the Giant River Otter ranks among the most efficient predators of the region. They are, as with many otter species, very sociable, and fiercely protective of their territory. They hunt during the day, and their loud calls make them relatively easy to locate.

Caiman

Caimans are one of the most memorable animals of Central and South America, and reptile lovers, in particular, will enjoy the opportunity to see plenty of these compact crocadilians while exploring the habitat. Ranging in size from under a metre to up to four, Caimans can often be seen floating in swampy areas, keeping an eye out for fish and other small prey.

Hyacinth Macaw

Birders are in for a real treat on a Jaguar safari, as the forests in which the big cats are to be found are also home to some of the most beautiful birdlife on the planet. There are many species worth mentioning, but one that truly stands out among them is the Hyacinth Macaw, which, with its body length of 100 cm, is the longest species of parrot in the world. With brilliant azure plumage, a large black beak and bright yellow skin around its beak and eyes, it is a striking sight to behold.
